Celebrating the 900th Anniversary
of the Founding of our Norbertine Order
1121 – 2021
“On Christmas night 1121,
in the solitude of Prémontré,
St. Norbert gave birth
to a new community
of the ancient Order of canons,
and whose fruits
the Church gathers today.”
– Pope St. John Paul II, from a letter to the Premonstratensian Order, 1993
It was on Christmas in 1121 that St. Norbert and his first followers made their profession, marking the official founding of our own Order of Prémontré. This 900th Jubilee Year is an indulgenced year of grace, during which we may all strive to imitate St. Norbert, the man of faith, so that Christ may transform us into instruments of His loving mercy for the Church and the world.
From the first Sunday of Advent, November 29, 2020 to the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, Sunday, January 9, 2022, the faithful are able to earn, once a day, a Plenary Indulgence. Please click here for more information.
The Bethlehem scene above includes, in the foreground, our holy fathers — St. Norbert (“Apostle of the Eucharist”), our founder, and St. Augustine (“Doctor of Grace”), the author of our Holy Rule. Surrounding the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Infant Jesus are (clockwise) St. John the Baptist, St. Joseph, and other Norbertine Saints. (Artist: Caspar de Crayer, 1655, Averbode, Belgium)
